Use These Tips to Stay Afloat During a Flood

If you browse national news feeds, you will probably see multiple areas that have been hit by floods recently. Could the Traverse City area be next? Flash floods are the most common weather disaster in the United States. Floods can start carrying objects away in as little as two feet of water, even a car!
To help you and your family survive a flood disaster, we’d like to share five flood preparedness tips in honor of FEMA’s National Preparedness Month (NPM).

  • #1. Create a Plan – Make sure that you have a family emergency plan. Take some time to review it with your family. To make this process easier, Paul Davis has a form you can download at the link at the end of this post.
  • #2. Develop an Emergency Kit – Make sure you have the following items: a gallon of water per person, a first aid kit, battery-powered radio, signal whistle, dust masks, moist towelettes, garbage bags, wrench, and local maps.
  • #3. Keep Gutters Clean – Your gutters play an important role during heavy rains. Make sure they are free of debris and drains are unclogged.
  • #4. Look at Flood Maps – Know the flood risk in your area and get proper insurance. It is essential to know if you reside in a severe flood area. To look at flood maps in Traverse City, click on the link at the end of the post.
  • #5. Understand Flood Terms – It is important to know the difference between a flood watch and a flood warning. A flood watch means that there is a chance a flood will occur in your area. A flood warning is saying that a flood is imminent and that you need to take action.
