Two Most Common Home Damages Caused by Winter Weather

Some home damage can be difficult to avoid during Traverse City winters. To help reduce the possibility of something like this happening, we would like to discuss the two most common problems and how you can avoid them.
Frozen pipes are by far one of the most common problems to occur in the winter. They are also one of the problems we have a bundle of ideas to share on prevention. If the forecast is projected to creep below 20 degrees Fahrenheit, try some of the ideas below.

  • Keep the heat on. Keeping the house warm will keep your pipes warm. While it may seem attractive to save money on your heat, the price of repairs following a burst pipe is not worth the savings.
  • In extreme cold temperatures, let your faucets drip. This can keep the pipe from freezing.
  • Call a plumber immediately if your pipes freeze.

Second, ice dams are another big risk from frigid cold weather. The key here is to take precautions before it is even cold outside.

  • Insulate your attic. Good insulation keeps warm air out of the attic and prevents snow from melting.
  • Create ventilation. Cool down your attic through an eave, soffit, ridge, gable, or other form of ventilation.
  • Call Paul Davis Restoration & Remodeling of Northwest Michigan ASAP if an ice dam does appear on your roof.
