Safety Tips From National Fire Prevention Week

National Fire Prevention Week will be on October 5-11, 2014. With this week coming up, Paul Davis Restoration & Remodeling of Northwest Michigan would like to provide you with a few safety tips to prevent residential fires.

The #1 cause of fires in the home is cooking. Don’t leave items to cook on the stove while unattended, as hot oil, grease, or forgotten food can flare up in just a few seconds. Loose clothes can also be a hazard, as sleeves can catch fire if they touch an open flame. When they are not being used, keep flammable pot holders and kitchen towels away from the stove and oven. Make sure you have an ABC-rated fire extinguisher at close proximity in your kitchen.

Working smoke detectors can save lives and prevent property damage. The National Fire Prevention Association states that 60% of fatalities from residential fires occur in homes with either missing or non-working smoke detectors, according to a report in 2014. The NPFA also states that unreliable smoke alarms almost always have missing, disconnected, or dead batteries. Set aside some time to test your smoke detectors today.

We want our friends and neighbors in Traverse City to be safe. In our work, we clean up and repair property damage from fire, smoke, and water from firefighting efforts with the goal of getting homes and businesses back to normal as soon as possible.
